사무엘은 하나님의 음성을 듣는 선지자였습니다. 어렸을 적 사무엘은 하나님이 들려주시는 말씀을 엘리 제사장이 부르는 소리로 알고 그를 찾아가곤 했습니다. 엘리 제사장은 사무엘에게 하나님의 음성이 들릴 때 "여호와여 말씀하옵소서. 종이 듣겠나이다." 라고 대답하도록 가르쳐 줍니다. 그 때부터 사무엘은 하나님의 음성을 듣기 시작했고, 하나님의 사람으로써, 이스라엘의 선지자요 사사로 세워지기 시작했습니다.

저는 새벽에 기도할 때 많은 생각이 떠오르곤 합니다. 그 날 처리해야 할 일들과 새로운 관점에서 조명되는 말씀입니다. 처음에는 그런 생각들을 지나쳐 버렸는데, 일상으로 돌아온 후 기도할 때 떠올랐던 할일 목록과 말씀을 기억해 내지 못해서 안타까웠던 적이 여러 번 있었습니다. 그 때부터는 기도 중에 떠오르는 할일 목록과 말씀을 모두 종이에 적었습니다. 기도 집중에 방해가 되기도 하지만, 그렇게 적은 내용이 때로는 letter 용지 앞뒤를 가득 채울 때도 있습니다.

제가 온 종일 혹은 더 자주 기도한다면, 하나님께서는 더 많은 지혜를 주실 것을 기대하게 되었습니다. “쉬지 말고 기도하라”(살전 5:17)는 말씀이 여기서 적용되어야 한다고 생각했습니다. 지난 주간 기도원에 올라가면서 이 부분을 훈련하고 싶었습니다. 새벽기도 시간을 포함하여 아침, 점심, 저녁, 그리고 잠자기 전 총 5회에 걸쳐 말씀 묵상과 교회와 성도를 위한 기도의 시간을 가졌습니다. 물론 쉬운 일은 아니었습니다. 하지만 그렇게 순간마다 주님의 말씀을 듣는 훈련이 된다면 저의 사역을 훨씬 더 역동적인 모습으로 바뀔 것이라는 기대를 하게 되었습니다.

하나님은 인간을 당신의 형상으로 창조하셨습니다. 하지만 인간은 하나님의 형상과 그로 인한 생명의 능력을 상실한 채 살아갑니다. 우리가 그분을 믿을 뿐만 아니라 그분과의 더 깊은 관계 안에 거할 때 그분은 우리를 더 크고 깊은 진리로 인도하실 것입니다. 하나님께서 주시는 더 깊은 진리와 은혜의 자리로 함께 나아가기를 소망합니다. 감사합니다.

 

Samuel listening to God

 

Samuel was a prophet who listened to the Word of God. In his young age, when God called him, he used to come to the priest Eli, because he thought that Eli called him. The priest Eli told him what he should say when he heard God speak - “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” Afterwards, he started to listen to God and grew as a man of God, a prophet, and a judge.

 

When I would pray in the early morning, ideas would come to me. While I pray, I would hear God speak to me, and also tasks to do for that day would organize themselves in my mind. I initially dismissed those thoughts as distractions, but I learned that I could never recall them later in the day. So I began to write down those thoughts as I prayed. Though it was a distraction while praying, I would sometimes fill up a whole sheet of paper writing down my thoughts during prayer.

 

I expected that if I prayed all day God would give me more wisdom. I thought that the saying “pray continually” applies in this situation. Last week when I was at the paryer centre, I wanted to train myself to pray continually. I prayed about five times a day, during daybreak, breakfast, lunch, and dinner and before going to sleep. It was natural that it was not easy, but I came to expect that though continual prayer, I could do my ministry much more dynamically.

God created human beings according to His image. They, however, live without the image of God and any power of life that comes from Him. Not only when we believe in Him, but also when we abide in a deeper relationship with Him, He guides us to the way of bigger and deeper truth. I strongly hope that all of us approach the deeper truth and the throne of His grace. Thank you.
