로자 파크스(Rosa Parks)는 아프리카계 미국인 민권운동가입니다. 1955년 12월 1일, 앨라배마 주 몽고메리에서 백인 승객에게 자리를 양보하라는 버스 운전사의 지시를 거부하다가, 경찰에 체포되었습니다. 이 사건은 382일 동안 계속된 몽고메리 버스 보이콧으로 이어졌고, 인종 분리에 저항하는 큰 규모의 인권 운동으로 번져 갔습니다. 마틴 루터 킹 목사도 여기에 참여했고, 결국 아프리카계 미국인의 인권과 권익을 개선하는 미국 민권 운동의 시초가 되었습니다. Rosa Parks was an African-American civil activist. On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks refused to obey bus driver’s order to give up her seat to a white passenger and was arrested by the police. The event grew into a boycott of buses in Montgomery for 382 more days, and the African-American civil activist's movement grew to a formidable size to stop racial segregation. At this time, the pastor Martin Luther King began to participate and this became the root of American Civil Rights Movement to improve the African-American’s rights and benefits.

Rosa Parks도 처음부터 시민 혁명을 일으키려고 하지 않았던 듯합니다. 단지 그 상황에서 그렇게 하는 것이 옳다고 생각한 것입니다. 하지만 이 일은 그녀의 우발적인 행위도 아니었습니다. 그녀의 책 ‘조용한 힘’에서 말하듯이, 그녀의 용기 있는 행동은 ‘하나님을 믿는 믿음에서 비롯된 것’입니다. There are some common characteristics of many historic events. First, they start from very simple happenings. No one could have known that Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat would lead to such a movement. She only did it because she thought it was the right thing to do at the time. She also did the right thing because of her faith in God, as she wrote in her book "Quiet Strength."
‘어떤 일을 하는 것’보다 더 중요한 것은 ‘우리가 어떤 사람인가’ 입니다. Rosa Parks는 그 상황에서 그렇게 행동할 수밖에 없었습니다. 왜냐하면 그것이 바로 그녀의 인격의 표현이었기 때문입니다. 어떤 것도 의도적으로 꾸며지 않았습니다. 예수님께서 “너희는 세상의 소금이며, 빛이라”고 말씀하신 것도 같은 의미입니다. 그런 점에서 조금의 가식도 없이 그리스도인으로 사는 것은 매우 놀라운 축복입니다. Who we are is more important than what we do. Rosa Parks could not but but refuse to give up her seat in that situation, because her action was the expression of her character. She did not pretend to do anything. It is the same when Jesus said, “You are the salt and light of the world.” In the way it is a very great blessing to live as Christians without any pretense.
