얼마 전 한 성도님과 함께 구원의 확신에 대해 나눈 내용 일부를 나누고자 합니다. 처음 예수를 믿을 때 우리는 보통 감정에 근거한 구원의 확신을 가집니다. 하나님께서 주시는 기쁨으로 자신이 구원 받은 존재임을 느끼는 것입니다. 그러나 일반적으로 기쁨은 오래 지속되지 않고, 기쁨이 사라진 후에는 ‘내가 정말 구원 받았을까?’라고 질문합니다. 감정은 우리가 예수를 믿을 때 얻는 아주 좋은 반응이지만, 하나님의 사랑과 우리의 구원을 감정의 의존해서 판단할 때 우리는 중요한 두 가지 오류를 갖게 됩니다. 

 

첫째, 감정이라는 주관적 기준에 우리의 믿음의 근거를 놓게 됩니다. 믿음의 사람들도 삶의 자리에서 믿음이 흔들릴 수 있습니다. 시편 73편의 저자 아삽과 하박국 선지자는 믿는 자의 삶은 어려움이 지속되고, 불신자의 삶이 형통하는 것을 보면서 마음의 동요와 흔들림을 경험했습니다. 하지만 그들은 그런 현상으로 인해 오는 감정의 동요가 아니라, 하나님에 대한 신뢰를 유지함으로 승리했습니다. 성도는 이 땅에 사는 동안 하나님의 약속이 성취되기를 기다리면서 일시적으로 기쁨을 잃어버릴 수 있습니다. 이것이 바로 감정이 하나님을 믿을 때 오는 좋은 것임에도 불구하고, 감정에 믿음의 근거를 둘 수 없는 이유입니다.

 

두 번째 이유는 우리가 감정에 구원의 근거를 둘 때 우리 자신을 기계와 같은 존재로 여기게 되기 때문입니다. 기계는 INPUT에 의해 OUTPUT이 정확하게 나오도록 고안된 것입니다. 감정에 근거를 두는 믿음은 믿음의 결과로 인해 감정이 항상 따라와야 한다는 생각을 갖게 합니다. 이러한 상관관계를 강하게 가질수록 우리는 하나님을 신뢰하는 것이 아니라, 감정을 신뢰하게 됩니다. 감정적인 반응에 초점을 맞추고 살아갑니다. 그래서 하나님께서는 우리가 믿을 때 부득이 기쁨을 잃어버리게 하시기도 합니다. 기쁨을 잃었을 때조차도 하나님을 신뢰하고 순종하는 것은 우리가 참된 믿음 안에 있음을 확인해 줍니다.

 

믿음의 삶에서 기쁨은 매우 중요합니다. 하지만 감정을 구원의 근거로 삼는 것은 옳지 않습니다. 감정은 예수를 믿을 때 따라오는 것입니다. 신앙 생활에서 누리는 감정을 바르게 이해하는 것은 건강한 믿음생활에 매우 유익합니다. 균형 잡힌 신앙 생활을 통해 주님께서 주시는 풍성한 은혜를 누리시기를 원합니다.

When the conviction of the salvation is weak (1)

 

I would like to talk about the conviction of our salvation as I talked about it when asked by one of my church members. When we begin to believe in Jesus, we usually have conviction of our salvation on the basis of our emotion, that is, we believe we are saved because of the incredible joy we experience when we start to believe. The feeling, however, does not last forever, and when it disappears, we may begin to doubt our salvation. Even though it is important to have an emotional response to the beginning of our faith in Jesus Christ, relying solely on emotion can lead us to stumble in our faith. Here are two reasons why.

 

First, when we rely solely on emotion, we are laying the foundation of our faith on a subjective experience that is ephemeral by nature. Even people of faith are shaken emotionally in their lives. Many devout people in the Bible, including Asaph, an author of the Psalms, and Habakkuk, a minor prophet, had experienced inner unrest in the face of difficult situations. They, however, overcame those periods not through emotional control, but by their trust in God. Believers may lose their joy temporarily while waiting for the completion of God's promise, and though it is right and a gift from God to feel joy about our salvation, it is a mistake to lay the foundation of our faith on our emotions.

 

Second, when we base our faith on our emotions, we are treating our faith as a machine. A machine is designed to have a specific outcome given an input. Considering the joy that we feel when we first start to believe, we may mistakenly measure the state of our faith based on how much joy we feel in God. The more we believe in such a mechanical view of our faith, the more we rely on our emotions and not on God. Indeed, God sometimes takes away our happiness so that we know what it is to trust and obey in God through true faith in Him. It is when all things are taken away from us and we still rely on God and God only that we can know that we truly believe in Him.

 

Joy is very important in our lives of faith, but it is not right for our emotions to become the foundation of our faith. Emotion follows our faith, and it is vital to understand the role emotion has in our faith. I hope that we all can enjoy our lives to the fullest in God as we balance our emotions in our lives of faith.
